About Canfield
Canfield is named after the owner of a gambling saloon in Saratoga in the 1890's. He charged his mathematically-challenged customers a fortune to play this game, but
he was the big winner! Canfield is also known as
Demon in Great Britain.
Canfield and Klondike games have four elements in common: Tableau Stacks, Foundation Piles, a Wastepile and Deck. However, Canfield varies from Klondike in three key ways:
- Demon Pile
- An extra reserve of cards
- Base Card
- A random card which determines the starting value of the Foundation Piles, and
- Circular Tableau and Foundation Rules
- An Ace can be placed on a King and vice versa
To Win
The goal of Canfield is to place 13 cards of the same suit, in each of the Foundation piles.
Foundation Rules
At the start of the game, the first Foundation Pile is occupied by a random Base Card, which determines the starting value (e.g. 4) of cards that can be placed on the remaining Foundation Piles.
Canfield Foundation Piles are circular: an Ace can be placed on a King.
The Demon
The Demon Pile is automatically laid out with 13 cards. The face-up card of the Demon can be played to either the Tableau Stacks or Foundation Piles. Cards cannot be moved to the Demon.
When a Tableau Stack is emptied, a card is automatically moved to the Stack from the Demon.
If the Demon is empty, you can move a card from the Wastepile to an empty Tableau Stack.
Building within the Tableau
Build the Tableau Stacks downwards in alternating color. Kings can be placed on Aces.
The front-most card of a Tableau Stack can be moved to another Tableau Stack if it builds down in alternating color.
Tableau cards cannot be moved to an empty Tableau Stack.
All cards in a Tableau Stack can be moved as a group to another Tableau stack if they build downwards in alternating color.
Dealing
Clicking on the Deck will deal up to three cards at a time to the Wastepile. The number of cards dealt out depends on the particular game.
